![]() ![]() Off to school goes young Dieter, where he meets a bunch of kids, has usual teen experiences of distrust, dislike and lust, and is introduced to the ideas of magical powers and the politics of magical land. ![]() Some folks take an abnormal interest in Dieter but he doesn't think much of it, is surprised to be offered a special scholarship from some far away special school that produces super successful kids. Dieter is a pretty good student, hopes to get a scholarship and go to college but weird things start happening around him - like a bully's head explodes when he is picking on poor Dieter. This is the story of Dieter Resnick, a kid from a post-recession Vegas that looks even bleaker than the real post-recession Vegas. The first book (and series) I read in this space is B. There is "I'm a tough guy/ex-con/bad dude and WHOA! I've got magical powers!" There is "I'm a hot girl and WHOA! I've got magical powers!" Today I'm reviewing two different series but they are largely the same story (thus far) - their story? "I'm a petulant, angsty teen and WHOA! I've got magical powers!" "WHOA! I've got magical powers!" seems to be a popular one and there are not as many variants on it as I might like. As I've been reading a lot of eBooks lately, one thing I've noticed is that there are certainly themes in the type of eBook it seems popular to write and publish. ![]()

![]() In the title story, a bunch of college kids get hooked on a card game, discover the possibility of protest. He also discovers that adults are sometimes not rescuers but at the heart of the terror. In Part One, 'Low Men in Yellow Coats', eleven-year-old Bobby Garfield discovers a world of predatory malice in his own neighbourhood. Each story is deeply rooted in the sixties, and each is haunted by the Vietnam War. Hearts in Atlantis is composed of five interconnected, sequential narratives set in the years from 1960 to 1999. Images from that war - and the protests against it - had flooded America living rooms for a decade. Stephen King, whose first novel, Carrie, was published in 1974, the year before the last US troops withdrew from Vietnam, is the first hugely popular writer of the TV generation. ![]() 'Although it is difficult to believe, the sixties are not fictional they actually happened. ![]() ![]() The book explains far more than the size of ancient insects: it shows how oxygen underpins the origin of biological complexity, the birth of photosynthesis, the sudden evolution of animals, the need for two sexes, the accelerated aging of cloned animals like Dolly the sheep, and the surprisingly long lives of bats and birds. Lane takes the reader on an enthralling journey, as gripping as a thriller, as he unravels the unexpected ways in which oxygen spurred the evolution of life and death. This is just one of the puzzles Nick Lane answers in Oxygen. ![]() If atmospheric oxygen reached 35 per cent in the Carboniferous, why did oxygen promote exuberant growth, instead of rapid aging and death? Fruit flies raised at twice the normal level of oxygen live half as long as their siblings. Researchers claim they could have flown only if the air had contained more oxygen than today-probably as much as 35 per cent. Most other people live amongst their clans and hunt and work together. His father brought him up away from people and never told him anything about his past, other than the names of the clans of his people. Torak is a special boy, he just never knew it (and only gradually learns just how special as the book goes on). He tells Torak that his guide will find him. ![]() They are part of the Wolf Clan, but Toraks fathers last instructions to him are not to seek people out, but to instead journey many days away to find the Spirit of the Mountain so that the bear can be defeated before it kills the Forest. The Paris Apartment is told from multiple points of view, with the heroine being Jess, a barmaid from England. It’s fairly uncommon for me to be completely surprised by the ending of a psychological thriller, but Lucy Foley does it every time. At the risk of sounding conceited, when you read as many thrillers as I do, at some point it becomes easy to predict the twist. ![]() ![]() ![]() But Christmastime interventions from above work to place the two together. Shakey (the title refers to one of Young's many aliases) is also the compelling human story of a lonely kid for whom music was the only outlet, a driven yet tortured figure who controlled his epilepsy via 'mind over matter', an oddly passionate model train mogul who, inspired by his own son's struggle with cerebral palsy, became a major activist in the quest to help those with the condition. Shakey is the whole story of Young's incredible life and career: from his childhood in Canada to the founding of folk-rock pioneers Buffalo Springfield the bleary conglomeration of Crazy Horse and the monstrous success of Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young to the depths of the Tonight's the Night depravity and the Geffen years and Young's unprecedented nineties 'comeback'.
